Philosopher-Insurgent – ​​we recall the figures

Last year, on the occasion of the anniversary of the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising, we recalled the figure of Philosopher-Insurgent Prof. Jerzy Pelc. This year, we are commemorating Prof. Andrzej Grzegorczyk in our social media, inviting you to supplement the information with details. More below.

A year ago, in our media, we encouraged you to read the biography of Prof. Jerzy Pelc (1924-2017), a long-time lecturer at our faculty and previously a soldier of the Warsaw Uprising (pseudonym “Warecki”): https://www.1944.pl/powstancze-biogramy/jerzy-pelc,55365.html

This year, we are recalling Prof. Andrzej Grzegorczyk (1922-2014), philosopher and mathematician, long-time employee of the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1950-1974) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw (1960-1968), and from 1974 – of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where from 1982 he headed the Ethics Workshop. He was 21 years old when he became a soldier of the “Gustaw” battalion in the Warsaw Uprising. He was wounded on August 13, 1944 in the explosion of a “trap tank” on Kilińskiego Street in Warsaw. Right after the war, in the years 1946-1948, he was an assistant to Władysław Tatarkiewicz and secretary of the editorial office of “Przegląd Filozoficzny”.
