Freddie’s Left Hand: Queen and the Order of Music
The lecture will be delivered by

Abstract:
How can just four people make all that music? The question is often asked when people hear Queen. Of course the band over-dubbed in the studio, as almost all bands do. But their ability to produce a live sound that was so full, even when Freddie was only singing and not also playing, has puzzled many people. The answer is that complementarity in musical sound follows non-linear patterns that the body feels as a whole, and that are then separated into the different senses of sound, sight by the body only after they are experience as a whole, as a total feel that includes the sound but is far more than just sound. When musicians know this, as Queen always did, they are able to create musical experiences that move in and through us as nonlinear wholes, completed symbols of feeling, that we only hear after we have already rocked to the feel. A lot of the “blending” work that creates “a total feel” is done by the way rock musicians use their left hands, especially those who play keyboard instruments (which includes three members of Queen). In this talk, I will teach you to think and arrange your actions with your left hand, because the principles apply to more than just music.
