Abstrakt:

For a long time, the dominant narrative describing the relationship between politics and religion or the State and Church within Western Social Theory has been the thesis of secularization. It was, however, not only the concept describing the relationship between the State and Church/Religion but also the main category of Self-description and Self-identification of Modern Social Thought.

The prominent German sociologist of religion and systems theorist Niklas Luhmannpoints out in his book: “A Systems Theory of Religion” (“Die Religion der Gesellschaft”): “It is difficult to deny sociology’s identification with secularization. Ever since the time of Auguste Comte, secularization has been a part of its thematics, and one in which it includes itself. […] In comparison with religion, sociology’s self-description can thus accommodate secularization only to the extent that it makes notheological commitment.” But is it possible to describe, interpret and examine religion without addressing its theological contents or relating the theological dimension of religion? And to what extent is the thesis of secularisation, in its part, free from theological bias?

In my lecture, I will address two questions: What can the Sociology of Religion contribute to the scientific study of religion, and what can Theology contribute to the social theoretical discourse on religion? Then I will discuss how the concept of secularization can be productively applied, without sharing the premises of this theory, using the epistemological and methodological approach of Niklas Luhmann. I will illustrate this approach with examples of alternative concepts describing the relationship between the State and Religion. I will try to show how important is to understand social phenomena and social concepts within their specific cultural, political, and legal embeddedness.
