Quantifying Pseudoscience
Wykład odbędzie się w poniedziałek, 9 marca 2026, o godz. 15.00 w auli im. Marii Ossowskiej.
Abstrakt wystąpienia:
The demarcation problem – trying to propose a criterion that would separate pseudoscience from regular science – is a traditional conundrum within philosophy of science. Various proposed solutions generally adopt a strongly normative perspective, identifying what we should reject as pseudoscience and why. In addressing demarcation, however, understanding the actual content and structure of various fringe doctrines is crucial in making sense of the differences and similarities with science. In our talk, we will present a descriptive and empirically grounded approach to demarcation, first giving a brief overview of certain “paradigmatic” examples of pseudoscience, followed by preliminary results of a quantitative analysis of the citation network of the astrological journal Correlation. Finally, we will discuss whether (and how) these results can contribute to the actual philosophical task of demarcation
